Published: 25 October 2013

Dr David McDonald, a Research Fellow in the Centre for Risk Research received a best paper award at the 1st Asia Pacific Conference on Gambling and Commercial Gaming Research in Macao, China.

The paper, which David co-authored with Professors Ming-Chen Sung and Johnnie Johnson, was entitled 'Resolving the question of why the favourite-longshot bias exists in some betting markets but not in others'. The paper built on David's PhD research which examined how bettors often demonstrate a bias towards speculating on the success of either the most or least favourite participant in a sporting event. David said "I am extremely pleased to accept this award on behalf of myself, Ming-Chen Sung and Johnnie Johnson, and to have further extended the international outreach of the work undertaken at the Centre for Risk Research." David is now busy working on an EPSRC project that examines novel ways of modelling the 'wisdom of the crowd'.
