Dr Brito meets Cllr Christopher Hammond

Dr Brito is the Principal Investigator in a Southampton Marine and Maritime Institute (SMMI) Higher Education Initiative Fund (HEIF). The aim HEIF project is to develop a large cross-disciplinary research project to quantify the risk of air pollution in port cities and the impact of government and local policies. Co-investigators in this project are Professor George Attard, Dr Matt Loxham, Professor Mikis Tsimplis and Mr Gareth Giles.

The stakeholder engagement plan for the HEIF project comprises two stages. First Dr Brito and colleagues have engaged industry stakeholders in order to assess their appetitive for different air pollution control policies. The second stage involves engaging with public health scientists and council officials.

Cllr Hammond expressed support for this research and mentioned initiatives put in place by the council to reduce air pollution. In addition to the HEIF project, Dr. Brito, Mr. Gareth Giles and Cllr Christopher Hammond discussed other potential collaboration projects.

In commenting about this meeting, Dr. Brito said, “I was astonished by the enthusiasm from the Cllr Hammond for implementing the green agenda and the number of initiatives lead by the Southampton City Council. I am looking forward to future collaborations with the Local Council.   ”
