Civic universities are deeply embedded in their local city or region. They focus on a place-based strategy to benefit the community through partnership working and civic engagement.

The civic University of Southampton works in collaboration with:

  • local authorities
  • business and industry
  • health leaders
  • environmentalists
  • arts, cultural and voluntary organisations

Together our goal is to achieve inclusive growth and prosperity for every community in the Hampshire and the Solent region.

Our approach

Our civic work draws on the application of the University’s ‘triple helix strategy’ and incorporates five principles underpinning our approach:

  1. Regional — ensuring our civic engagement is inclusive of and relevant to our Central South geography.
  2. Impactful — benefitting from the University's scale, resources and reach to act as a partner that makes a real difference.
  3. Collaborative — designed and delivered with external stakeholders and partners to ensure our work is tackling their real-world challenges.
  4. Transformational — scalable and long term in its ambitions for impact, positive change and progress towards meeting the Central South’s challenges .
  5. Measurable — so we know what impact we are having.
