I find the course challenging, yet insightful and rewarding. The department boasts some of the world’s best researchers in their respective fields, they are approachable, happy to provide advice and the standard of teaching is very high. Chemistry Undergraduates benefit from state-of-the-art facilities and equipment, which allow us to apply our knowledge in the lab and provides an excellent skills base.

I stayed close to home, working for a successful but close-knit company called Vertex Pharmaceuticals near Oxford. They specialise in anticancer therapy and Cystic Fibrosis in a specific subgroup of patients, and have previously revolutionised treatment for Hepatitis B. My interest in this field stemmed from my research project and really complimented the placement.

The unique selling point of the MedSci programme, for which the course appealed to me most, is the 6-month placement opportunity. The success of the work placement programme is largely dependent on its excellent management, along with the huge range of industrial and academic networks that span all 4 corners of the globe.

I take an active part in university life to enrich my studies. I work with the outreach program to kindle school children’s interest in science through fun events held on campus. I help at open days to promote the university and encourage bright budding scientists through our doors. I took on the role of secretary within the Chemistry society, which hosts a number of interactive socials, lectures and conferences designed to entertain and introduce valuable networks within industry. I am also involved in the Chemistry parenting scheme and regularly communicate with my ‘kids’; explaining theory, supplying notes from my lectures, or simply catching up with their news. I take part in sporting events in athletics and Cross country. I have won a number of titles and have represented England on a number of occasions. The excellent Sport and Wellbeing scheme provided by the university has been a key feature in this success.

All in all, my time so far at Southampton University has been thoroughly enjoyable and I look forward to my remaining time here as an undergraduate and quite possibly postgraduate.

During his time at Southampton, Alex has achieved the following sporting successes:
