About this course

Our Physics PGCE initial teacher training course offers a perfect mix of practical school experience and a deep understanding of the science curriculum in schools.

You’ll learn about the latest insights into effective science teaching and be guided by experienced tutors who have a wealth of knowledge from teaching science in schools. Expert local science teachers and senior leaders will also contribute to your training.

PGCE Physics will be your specialism but you'll graduate with the skills to teach all 3 sciences at Key Stage 3, GCSE and to post-16 students.

This subject-specific PGCE secondary Physics programme will boost your employability across the full range of schools and colleges in the UK. The combination of PGCE and QTS ensures your qualification is recognised by schools in the UK and across the world.

Physics PGCE curriculum

The programme covers all aspects of the Initial Teacher Training and Early Career Framework (ITTECF) set by the Department for Education (DfE). It has a deeper focus on subject-specific areas and explores:

  • different types of knowledge in school science
  • effective sequencing across science topics
  • making explanations of abstract science concepts clear and engaging
  • incorporating socio-scientific issues (like climate change, net-zero, and genetic engineering) into your teaching
  • using practical work effectively
  • making science accessible to all

You'll have the opportunity to prepare and conduct a fieldwork experience. You'll also get an introduction to post-16 teaching on the physics PGCE specialism.

You'll develop strategies and skills in:

  • meeting professional expectations of teachers
  • managing the classroom
  • monitoring and assessing pupils
  • supporting children with special educational needs and disabilities
  • keeping children safe
