Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) courses

To be ready for the challenges of teacher training, not to mention the classroom, your subject knowledge and understanding has to be of a sufficient standard. If your degree subject is not close enough to the subject you want to teach, or you need a refresher focused on the 11-18 curriculum, you can take additional training before your initial teacher training (ITT).

Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) courses are intensive programmes for graduates who need to develop a greater depth of subject knowledge and understanding prior to a PGCE or other initial teacher training course. Each course is carefully designed by subject experts to develop the necessary skills and subject knowledge to teach your subject across the 11-16 age range. These are nationally recognised qualifications, fully supported by the DfE, designed to address the on-going shortage of specialist teachers in some subjects. Bursaries are available for eligible applicants and there are normally no fees to pay.

The University of Southampton Education School is currently offering the following SKE courses, in preparation for starting a PGCE or other initial teacher training course (either here at Southampton or with any other provider, including School Direct and employment-based programmes):

SKE Computer Sciences Subject Knowledge Enhancement

SKE Mathematics Subject Knowledge Enhancement

SKE Science Subject Knowledge Enhancement
