Research project

Mapping the night: encounters with liminal spaces

Project overview

The night is a liminal space where natural darkness is seldom found. Southampton is a city with significant sources of artificial light at night (ALAN), driving environmental harm and social inequalities. Many citizens are unaware of the detrimental effects of ALAN, and those living in higher levels of light pollution feel less safe.

Our interdisciplinary project will map the night, quantifying it spatially and experiencing it sensorially through night walks. We will develop ALAN as an area of public health research and stimulate local activity. We envision a future where multispecies can thrive and people feel safe at night.

This project has been funded by the Sustainability and Resilience Institute.
