Dr Konstantinos Katsikopoulos, an Associate Professor in Behavioural Operations and a member of the Centre for Risk Research (CRR), recently delivered an inaugural lecture at the launch of the new American Express Laboratory for Data Analytics, Risk & Technology (DART).

The DART Lab was launched at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras on 3rd September 2020. The lab aims to establish itself as a world-leading centre for research on the relationships between Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, human behaviour and risk. One of the primary goals of the lab is to better manage risk by developing a science-based understanding of human behaviours when interacting with technological systems. The lab hopes to achieve this by establishing partnerships between academics and practitioners.

During the lab’s launch event, Dr Katsikopoulos delivered a lecture on the science and art of transparent decision making. This is a body of work - soon to be published in an MIT Press book https://mitpress.mit.edu/books/classification-wild  - that delineates simple and accurate models for making challenging real-world classifications, such as assigning medical treatments at the site of an injury or granting bail to a person awaiting trial.

In response to delivering his lecture, Dr Katsikopoulos commented “I am excited to work with the DART lab and connecting it with research performed at the CRR on building models that analyse human behaviour in domains characterised by risk, such as insurance”.
