Event details

This is a regional joint seminar co-hosted by Munich Re and Southampton Business School’s Centre for Risk Research

Abstract:
For several months, a Project Team at Southampton Business School has been working with Munich Reinsurance Company to extract risk information from US Securities and Exchange Commission 10-K risk reports. These reports, which are filed annually by companies with over $10 million in assets, contain a section 1A entitled “risk factors”. This section requires informative discussion of significant risks to the company. Several studies indicate that the section 1A form-filling requirement has succeeded in eliciting a good level of detail on corporate risk exposures across a wide variety of industries, especially for risks which companies are more concerned about.

Using this data, the Munich Re – Southampton Business School project has undertaken to design a risk classification architecture (or ‘risk matrix’). The design specification has been for the matrix to comprise both high level general risk categories and more specific risk subcategories, and to capture significant risks for companies which are common across various industries, while also remaining sensitive to industry specific risks.

At the seminar, representatives of both the Business School project team and Munich Re will discuss their risk matrix solution and the advantages it offers for companies who decide to use it.  Issues of methodology and technical language for risk matrix design will be covered. The seminar is intended to be of interest to all risk professionals, academics and students who wish to become more familiar with the technical challenges associated with risk matrix design and the advantages of well-designed matrices.
