Hi, I'm Joe Beckhelling and I studied BA Music within Humanities at the University of Southampton.

Southampton is home to some great performance venues. The studios are very well equipped. The teaching has also been fantastic and I’ve found that the lecturers are always willing to help you.

What made you choose Southampton?

I was attracted by the breadth of modules offered here, particularly conducting as that’s something I really wanted to get into. I didn’t find that very many other unis offered it, so that was a big pull. I also really liked the campus, and how green it is.

What do you think of the teaching and facilities at Southampton?

They’ve got great performance venues and there are a lot of opportunites for music tech, which I’ve got into while I’ve been here. The studios are very well equipped. The teaching has also been great and I’ve found that the lecturers are always willing to help you.

Do you have a particular module which stood out as a highlight for you?

Alongside my conducting, which I did as a performance module in my third year, it would probably be a studio techqniques module. Working in a group, you get to record yourself performing a song. I really enjoyed that it and it was a great opportunity to get into the studio.

Were you a member of any clubs or societies?

Yes I conducted in a few clubs. I conducted the University String Orchestra, the Symphony Orchestra, the Wind Orchestra and SUSingers, which is a kind of choir. I was involved with all of those. I was also involved with the University Chroral Scholars throughout my time here.

What advice would you give to prospective students?

Definitely go for it! I have had so many great opportunities here. I want to go into conducting as my career and I wouldn’t have been able to do that if I had gone anywhere else. Equal weight is given to jazz and pop musicians as well as classical musicians, which is great. There’s no categorising, so you can get involved in both if you have an interest in them.

What are your plans for the future?

Next year I will be gaining experience as a Musical Director. I’ve got a job at my old school as a music technician, which is great. After that, I am thinking about going to Germany or Austria to study Conducting at Masters level.
