My main reason for wanting to study at the University of Southampton was the opportunity to study at NOCS and the unique course options.

The geology programme offered a lot of fieldwork experience, much better than being restricted to lectures and both the marine biology and geology departments have excellent academic reputations.

I wanted to do my course because I have always been interested in marine biology and I really enjoyed doing A level geology; Southampton is the only place that offered this as a degree combination.

I like that NOCS is only for Ocean and Earth science degrees, it’s a much friendlier environment and it’s easy to get to know a lot of people quickly.

Lecturers are always happy to help out with any queries I have about work and as most of them are experts in their field their guidance is very useful. I get more module choices than I expected so have had the opportunity to study exactly what I want to and get the most out of my degree.

Over the summer I did voluntary work experience with Sea Life displays development team for four weeks. This gave me some useful contacts for marine biology and resulted in the offer of more work in the future.

Southampton is a really student friendly city with a lot of decent clubs and bars. It’s very easy to get around especially cycling and on the buses. I’ve always felt it’s a safe place to live and go out in. It is a lot greener than most cities with a lot of open spaces and parks throughout the city.

I am now an HR Advisor at Bibby Finances.
