Researchers from the Genetics of IBD study team shared their work at the NIHR Southampton BRC Open Day 2026, highlighting the importance of communicating research across scientific, clinical and public audiences.
Congratulations to Dr Lynn Winn, who was awarded joint second prize for her work on suspected pathological RELA deficiency in inflammatory bowel disease, with Guo Cheng, Alexandre Kadhim, Zachary Green and Josh Timson also presenting work from the study.
The Genetics of IBD Study, running at the University of Southampton since 2010, has reached a landmark 3,000 recruited participants. Led by Professors Sarah Ennis, Mark Beattie and Dr James Ashton this flagship cohort has generated impactful findings and continues to support high-quality translational research. This achievement reflects the tireless efforts of research nurses and the generosity of participants, to whom the team is extremely grateful.
Professor Mark Beattie has been appointed Chair of the Honorary Medical Advisory Panel for CICRA (Crohn's in Childhood Research Association). As a longstanding clinical leader in paediatric IBD, he provides strategic and clinical guidance at the heart of the charity’s mission. The team is proud to work closely with CICRA to improve outcomes for children and young people living with IBD.
Dr Zachary Green has been awarded a Guts UK / BSPGHAN grant to develop AI-assisted MRI biomarkers to personalise care and predict outcomes in paediatric inflammatory bowel disease. The project focuses on leveraging advanced imaging analytics to improve risk stratification and long-term monitoring. The work is supervised by Sarah Ennis, Alexandre Kadhim, Mark Beattie, and James Ashton.
Zachary Green and James Ashton completed a walk of 110 km of the South Downs Way - equivalent to three marathon distances over three days - raising over £2,000 for CICRA . This endurance challenge highlights their commitment to supporting children and families affected by inflammatory bowel disease.
