Dr. Mario Brito from the Centre for Risk Research (CRR) recently took part in the kick-off meeting for Work Package 7 of the Horizon 2020 project ‘Bringing together Research and Industry for the Development of Glider Environmental Services (BRIDGES)’.

The project involves 19 European partners spread across 9 different countries (http://www.bridges-h2020.eu/index.php) and has the aim of developing a new deep underwater glider capable of conducting observations at depths up to 5000 metres (and potentially deeper). Other innovative features of the glider are its extended endurance (minimum of 2 months) and hybrid horizontal flight mode, enabling fixed depth surveying. The vehicle will operate different suites of sensors to enable cost-effective science and environmental observations, targeting various user-groups such as marine science research, offshore oil and gas industries and subsea mining. The project is valued at Euro8M and started on March 2015 and is due to end on March 2019.
