Hi, I'm Daniela Goncalves Monteiro and I studied MNatSci Chemical Biology with Biochemistry within Chemistry at the University of Southampton.

Encompassing two different subjects, Natural Sciences is a demanding course, though the chance to be at the interface of overlapping areas is hugely rewarding.

Three years ago I embraced the change of my life and came to the UK to start a degree in Natural Sciences at the University of Southampton. At the time my choice was mainly driven by the reputation of the Chemistry department, but through the years I grew fonder of this university for all the opportunities I have been provided with. Natural Sciences, encompassing two different subjects, is in general a demanding course, though the chance to be at the interface of overlapping areas is hugely rewarding. For me in particular, it has been a great experience to work alongside chemists and biologists, getting a taste of what I may expect for the future.

The University of Southampton is also extremely dedicated to the social side of life. The number of societies to choose from is enormous, ranging from courses to sports and hobbies. I trust the selection will be the problem and especially fitting so many socials in a single schedule! Although the society of Natural Sciences is still is process, we are more than welcome to join others events and there is even a NatSci Rep within ChemSoc, position I am undertaking this year, responsible for scheduling regular meetings and ensuring all is going well.

As an international student I admit I was fearful at first, for moving to a foreign country, yet Southampton has proven exceptionally welcoming. Besides being quite multicultural in terms of events and places to hang out, several shops and markets bring a touch from even the remotest places. Moreover, the sun shines quite often and everything is within easy reach on foot, by bike or even by bus.

In the future I aim to apply the knowledge I will have gathered here, to improve the life of others. Working in industry is a possibility and many useful contacts are available at the different departments. Alternatively, I may consider pursuing with my studies and applying for a PhD in either Chemical Biology or Biochemistry.
