Professor Andrea E Russell is Professor of Physical Electrochemistry within Chemistry at the University of Southampton.

Andrea received her BS in 1986 from the University of Michigan and her PhD in 1989 from the University of Utah. She was a National Research Council Fellow at the US Naval Research Laboratory from 1990 – 1991 and then moved to the UK, where she started her academic career at the University of Liverpool , moving to the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in 1994, and the University of Southampton in 1997. She was promoted to Professor of Physical Electrochemistry in 2007.

She is the author or co-author of > 100 refereed papers, including invited review articles and has chaired a number of international conferences and symposia, such as the Gordon Research Conference on Fuel Cells (2002), a Faraday Discussion on Electrocatalysis (2008), and several symposia at annual meetings of the International Society of Electrochemistry. She is a member of the EPSRC College, Chair of the Diamond Users Group, a member of the Diamond Strategic Advisory Committee, a Vice-President of the International Society of Electrochemistry and a Fellow of both the Royal Society of Chemistry and Higher Education Academy.

 

Research interests

Andrea’s primary research interests are in the application of spectroscopic methods to study the electrode/electrolyte interface, with particular emphasis on electrocatalysts and electrode materials for fuel cells, metal-air batteries, water electrolysers, and gas sensors. Her work often involves the use of national and international facilities such as the Diamond Light Source, ISIS, and other synchrotron radiation sources in Europe and the USA. She is particularly known for her in situ and in operando X-ray absorption spectroscopic studies of electrocatalysts, with an emphasis on electrocatalysts for PEM fuel cells. She also takes part in collaborative projects on the identification of microplastics in the environment, working with colleagues in Oceanography and Environmental Sciences, and on the use of vibrational spectroscopy in the analysis of heritage materials, working with colleagues from the Winchester School of Art and History.

Andrea's undergraduate teaching contributions are primarily focused in the first year of Chemistry course, where she lectures on the core inorganic (CHEM1048), physical (CHEM1050), and analytical (CHEM1057) chemistry modules, as well as delivering a module on mathematical skills (CHEM1052) for students who have not taken A-level maths. She also delivers key-skills training as part of the practical chemistry modules in years 1 and 2 and lectures on ethical practices in science, engineering, and technology (UOSM2026). At the postgraduate level she contributes to the electrochemistry modules and the Southampton Electrochemistry Summer Schools, both in Southampton and abroad.
