The University of Southampton
Chemistry

Postgraduate Entry Requirements

All our postgraduate activity is targeted to doctoral level. As with most British universities, it is usual to register initially for an MPhil degree. Students then transfer to PhD registration subject to satisfactory progress.

To undertake chemistry postgraduate research, you will need to be able to demonstrate your interest in your chosen area, as well as a commitment to at least three years of research activity.

Academic criteria

The normal qualification for admission to the Graduate School of Chemistry is a good honours degree in chemistry or a related science subject. For many studentships, awards are limited to those with a 2:1 or first-class degree.

International students

The Graduate School welcomes applications from outside the European Community. You will need to have a good science background and we will review your particular qualifications when you apply.

We expect all post-graduate students to have a good command of English in order for them to benefit from training in the Graduate School. You will need to have already reached a satisfactory standard in an approved test in English, such as IELTS grade 6.5.

We are happy to work with you to bring your English up to the required standard and source courses if you need them.

If you are a new postgraduate or MChem applicant and subject to immigration control, you should check if you need to apply for an Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) clearance certificate before you apply for a visa. For further information see the Foreign and Commonwealth Office website. Your offer letter should contain all the relevant information you need for the ATAS application but if you have any queries please contact us.
