Studying chemistry at university has been more stimulating, enjoyable, rewarding and challenging than I expected. I decided to pursue chemistry because I was inspired by how chemistry can be applied to everyday applications. Being in an academic department that is driven by a strong research focus has given me the chance to work with and be taught by world-leading experts who frequently show the relevance of their course to their research which inspires me to learn. This atmosphere around the department has made me keen to start applying what I have learnt to a research environment.

My studies have not only enabled me to develop a greater depth of understanding in physical, organic and inorganic chemistry but have advanced my practical laboratory, study and independent working skills.

My studies have not only enabled me to develop a greater depth of understanding in physical, organic and inorganic chemistry but have advanced my practical laboratory, study and independent working skills. After I graduate, I hope to complete a PhD as I feel that this will better equip me for research work in industry. I am open to the idea of career changes though, and I know my degree will have prepared me well for them.

I applied late in the year to the department having been unsuccessful at medical school applications and having already been impressed on an open day by the atmosphere and facilities of the chemistry department. The staff were willing to accommodate me and a second visit to the department confirmed to me that I would enjoy learning here. The ‘open door' policy of the department means that approaching the teaching staff for help is easy. The common room allows both work and social conversations between undergraduates, post graduates and members of academic staff. I am very glad to have chosen to study chemistry despite it being originally my reserve option.

The campus is a great balance of green space and social areas as well as study spaces. The proximity of the campus to the city centre, shops and accommodation is also perfect for student life.

During my second year of study I was granted, the RSC undergraduate research bursary for a research project with Dr Raja's materials chemistry group over the summer. This is an exciting opportunity to gain an insight into research before embarking on a dissertation project in third year and will be an excellent experience to talk about at an interview.  I am looking forward to finding and going on to a six month placement in my forth year, it will be an excellent opportunity to get a flavour of industry and where my future career may lead me.
