The highlight of my time here has been my six month placement at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. This allowed me to build on independent project work I began undertaking in my third year, and to experience an entirely new culture and environment as part of my degree.

Why did you choose to come and study at Southampton?

Southampton seemed to have a really good sense of community within the department. I also felt that the students were treated with a large amount of respect, and that this fostered student growth and maturity.

What is it like studying here?

I’ve really enjoyed studying at Southampton. The lecturers are engaging and enthusiastic, the atmosphere on campus is vibrant but comfortable, and the student community itself extremely welcoming.

How do you rate the study facilities at the University?

Highfield Campus is a pleasant environment to study in. The lab facilities in the chemistry department are well-equipped and comfortable, and the Students’ Union offers a hub for social activities as well as some great advice services.

What have been your Southampton highlights?

The highlight of my time here has been my six month placement at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. This allowed me to build on independent project work I began undertaking in my third year, and to experience an entirely new culture and environment as part of my degree.

What did you enjoy most about your course?

As well as my placement, I have enjoyed the lab work and being able to expand my horizons with the wide range of modules available.

Did you have the opportunity to study modules outside of your core subject area?

I was able to study modules in maths, pharmacology and biochemistry, as well as a range of chemistry modules.

Did you stay in University accommodation?

I stayed in Wessex Lane halls for my first year. I found it a good way to make new friends and to get settled as everyone was in the same boat. It was also a good way to be eased in to living on my own for the first time.

What is the city of Southampton like to live in?

Southampton is a great city to be a student! The city has a lot of green spaces and is close to the New Forest, as well as having a diverse nightlife and vibrant student community.

What one word sums up how you feel about your experiences at Southampton?

Fascinating.

What are your aspirations for the future? How will your degree assist with your ambitions?

I will begin a PhD at Imperial College, London, working in a similar research area to the field I began working in during my 6 month placement. I have also acquired valuable practical and critical thinking skills.
