Active Control and Smart Structures

Smart structures are passive devices that can adapt to a changing environment, while active control methods also require actuators. Our research concerns the control of vibration using such methods. Specific examples include tunable vibration absorbers, active vibration isolation and wave-based control of vibration in beams, plates and pipes. These also involve the development of novel sensors, actuators and devices.
