Hi, I'm E-Lynn Tan and I studied BSc Mathematics with Actuarial Science within Mathematical Sciences at the University of Southampton.

The Mathematics Department had surpassed all my expectations. At first, I expected to be treated like ‘just another student’ but was proven wrong by the members of staff and their dedication.

Q: Why did you choose to undertake your studies with the University of Southampton?

As I had my mind set on taking Actuarial Science, when filling out my UCAS form, all that was left for me to do was to find a university with a strong reputation with a record of academic excellence. The University of Southampton caught my attention as they were one of the first few universities in the UK that started offering the Actuarial Science course. Besides that, the university also collaborates with the Institute of Actuaries to offer exemptions in the professional papers that I am required to take for my qualification. By being given the option of sitting those papers whilst in university meant that I would be able to reduce the time usually needed to obtain my qualifications significantly, which is great news!

At the same time, I did not want to study in a big city as I preferred a campus lifestyle, which was exactly what Southampton offered me. There are also a lot of activities constantly being organised, be it in the arts or social scene, taking place in the university as well as in town. With that, it can be said that Southampton offers just the right amount of entertainment without distracting me from my studies.

Q: What do you enjoy about studying at Southampton?

The Mathematics Department had surpassed all my expectations. At first, I expected to be treated like ‘just another student’ but was proven wrong by the members of staff and their dedication. Staff in the School Office are jovial and ever-willing to assist in any problems that students may face. Besides that, lecturers here are very dedicated and friendly, which makes them easy to approach especially when facing some problems in my studies. They take the time to get to know their students and get to the root of any problems that we might face.

The Careers Advisory Service here on campus also offers excellent advice. They offer one-to-one time to discuss possible career paths and assistance with CVs and job applications. They also offer a wide range of research materials on companies that are relevant to all the different job industries.

Q: What have you been able to achieve as a result of studying at the University of Southampton?

Another thing that the Mathematics Department takes pride in is their strong links with several companies in the industry. In addition to that, every year, several graduates are offered positions within various top firms in the industry (especially the ‘Big Four’). This then helps to strengthen the links even further and opening up even more opportunities to graduates of coming years!
Here in Southampton, I have also got the opportunity to meet people from different countries all over the world, hence opening my eyes to a lot of different cultures, beliefs and celebrations. Overall, I would say that my entire experience here in the University of Southampton has been a mind-exploding, eye-opening and unforgettable time! Best years of my life!
