Alex Paterson has successfully completed her PhD in which she studied how leukaemia in elderly people responds to treatment. She studied for her MSc in Biochemistry at Oxford and is now working in postdoctoral research at Southampton. “I am sure the choice of projects during my MRes year helped me to decide the right area to specialise in for my PhD”

Matt Loxham is researching how toxins in dust in underground railway tunnels affect the lungs. In his first year he was awarded a prize for his work in Southampton. Matt is enthusiastic about the programme structure of the Integrated PhD: “I believe the initial MRes year gave me the essential analytical tools to succeed”

Jacqui Pugh’s PhD project focuses on seeking a cure for the common cold by investigating the role of a protein found in the lungs. She says: “I chose to continue working on one of the projects I started during my MRes year for my doctorate but appreciated working on the others too”

Tom Jackson joined Southampton after studying Biology at Bath and is aiming for a career in medical research. “I’m investigating how cancer cells respond to treatment; whether they are killed or develop survival mechanisms. Working in three different labs during my MRes year gave me valuable experience”

Yifang Gao was one of the first students to graduate from the Integrated PhD programme. She is an international student and came to Southampton after taking a degree in Immunology in London. “I was influenced by the design of the doctorate and the way it links cancer and immunology research”
