Postdoctoral opportunities

The Faculty of Medicine is a diverse and supportive community, offering a variety of opportunities for postdoctoral staff and early career researchers (ECR) to carve out their own career path. In addition to a first-rate academic environment supported by world-class facilities, there are numerous additional opportunities for postdoctoral staff to expand and develop their capabilities.

Career Track Fellowships

We are committed to ensuring our talented ECRs have the opportunity to foster their futures in academia and research. The Postdoctoral Career Track Fellowship provides two years full salary funding to support the progression from ECR to becoming an independent academic.

Transferable Skills Programme

This programme of free workshops offers postdoctoral researchers and other early ECRs within the Faulty, the opportunity to learn and develop a range of transferable skills, and to increase their awareness of potential career pathways inside and outside of academia.

Mentoring

The Faculty Mentoring Scheme maintains an extensive database of potential mentors. Through access to this database and our regular mentoring matching sessions, postdoctoral researchers can identify mentors who can act as an independent source of career advice and support.

Research Conference

The Faculty holds an annual research conference, which provides ECRs from across the Faculty an opportunity to present their research through both oral and poster presentations.

Career development and advice

Medicine has established a Postdoctoral Association (PDA) to support the development of our ECRs and help each individual to enhance their personal effectiveness and professional development. The Committee comprises of ECR representatives and is chaired by Professor Delphine Boche who also acts as the Concordat Champion for the Faculty.

The PDA support events including an annual Christmas Lecture delivered by a distinguished speaker, regular Research Clubs within each School, and a monthly Enterprise Club. Dean’s Awards organised by the PDA recognise the outstanding non-research contributions of postdoctoral researchers to the Faculty, with a separate award available to acknowledge principle investigators, who are highly supportive of their postdoctoral team members.

For more information about the Postdoctoral Association contact Professor Delphine Boche or email resmed@soton.ac.uk.

Career Roadmap

The Faculty of Medicine Equality, Diversity and Inclusivity team have created an interactive Career Roadmap to assist ECRs in identifying their preferred career path and to raise awareness of the requirements to progress at each stage.
