Postdoctoral opportunities

Medicine is a vibrant and supportive environment offering a variety of opportunities to postdoctoral staff and early career researchers. In addition to a first-rate academic environment supported by world-class facilities. numerous additional opportunities for postdoctoral staff exist.

Career Track Fellowships

These fellowships offer awards to top quality postdoctoral scientists to foster their careers in academia. The award provides two years' full salary funding and is obtained through an annual competition. Career Track fellows may subsequently apply for Faculty pump-priming funding through the Research Management Committee.

Conference Attendance Fund

The Conference Attendance Fund is designed to assist eligible Medicine staff including postdoctoral researchers and postgraduate research students to attend conferences in the UK or overseas.

Transferable Skills Programme

This programme of workshops and online training material offer postdoctoral researchers and other members of Medicine the opportunity to learn and develop a range of transferable skills, and to increase their awareness of potential career pathways inside and outside of academia.

Our aim is to provide all research staff with access to a mentor, who will act as an independent source of career advice and support. Staff within the Faculty can find out more about what we offer via our internal SharePoint site. Click here to access the site.

Research Conference

The Faculty's annual Research Conference takes place in June each year. These two day Conferences showcase the excellent research being performed under the broad heading of 'Medicine and Health' at the University of Southampton.  The Conference features oral and poster presentations from postdoctoral researchers, postgraduate research students , and clinical academic trainees, as well as high profile guest speakers.

Career development and advice

Many different opportunities exist for postdoctoral researchers, both inside and outside academia and so we provide a range of resources to assist career development.

More information is available for current staff via our Postdoctoral Association SharePoint site. The Postdoctoral Association is a highly active group consisting of academic and postdoctoral members. Its remit is to support all postdoctoral staff within Medicine.

External visitors requiring more information about the Postdoctoral Association should contact Dr Jens Madsen or email

Career Roadmap

The Faculty of Medicine Equality, Diversity and Inclusivity team have created an interactive Career Roadmap to assist Early Career Researchers in identifying their preferred career path(s) and to raise awareness of the requirements to progress at each stage.

Please feel free to explore (up/down scroll on your mouse/track pad works well for navigating left/right).  We would be glad to hear if you find the roadmap useful, or can see anything you think might improve it. Please send feedback to Nicky Weston-Bell at or via our survey.
