Dr Andrew R. Hamilton has research interests in the development and mechanical characterisation of new and novel materials for structural and multifunctional uses. His research makes use of additive manufacturing (AM) and layer-wise coating techniques for processing materials with unique microstructures, properties, and targeting improved performance.

Of particular interest are:

  • Characterisation of porous materials including effects of anisotropy, heterogeneity, and processing outcomes on mechanical behaviour and biodegradation.
  • AM of metamaterials with controlled porous architectures, polymer foams, and templated coatings onto porous substrates.
  • Failure of AM metals and bimaterial metal joints including effects of processing outcomes.
  • Layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly of multilayer coatings for high mechanical strength/stiffness, and multifunctionality including biocompatibility, biodegradation, and antimicrobial activity.
