MA Holocaust: History, Experience, Heritage

Find out how you can learn about the Holocaust, Jewish history and culture, and the relations between Jews and non-Jews

Interested in studying the Holocaust? Join our MA Holocaust. Our MA explores the Holocaust both as a historic event as a source of memory and heritage, preparing you for a career in areas such as Holocaust education, outreach, heritage curation, public history and commemoration. You will also build a foundation for postgraduate research in a variety of Holocaust Studies fields.

Studying with as, you can:

  • Take part in a field trip to European Holocaust sites and museums
  • Discover our unique archives and library holdings - one of the largest Western European collections on modern Jewish history
  • Participate in practical workshops on the curation of Holocaust objects delivered in collaboration with external experts

You will engage with the different ways in which the Holocaust has been explored, discussed and presented through a range of specialist modules such as:

  • Understanding the Jewish Past:This module explores the rich variety of Jewish life and the development of Jewish experience, including Antisemitism and violence from the ancient to the contemporary world.
  • Researching the Holocaust: This module examines the development of Nazi persecution and the implementation of the "Final Solution" in different contexts, but also life in the camps, in ghettos and in hiding.
  • Communicating and Curating the Holocaust: This module explores the Holocaust as a problem of public pedagogy, examining how it has been memorialised, taught, and communicated from 1945 to the present. It considers Holocaust museums, education in schools and civil society, and the impact of the digital age on Holocaust awareness in the post-survivor era.
  • Rebuilding After the Holocaust: This module examines Jewish experiences in the aftermath of the Holocaust, exploring refugee journeys, debates over post-war futures, the rebuilding of communities, and interactions between Jews and others, while highlighting how the consequences of the Holocaust continued to shape lives for decades after liberation.
  • Representing the Holocaust: During this module, you'll examine representations of the Holocaust through a variety of mediums, including but not limited to art, film, literature, and music.
  • Field Trip: The programme includes a field trip to a European city (chosen by students), offering a chance to learn in depth about the Jewish past and Holocaust memory of a given place.

You'll also be required to complete an MA dissertation - a research project on an aspect of the Holocaust that interests you the most
