Dr Ian Harwood is an Associate Professor within Southampton Business School at the University of Southampton.

Ian is an experienced academic with interests in sustainability, corporate social responsibility and project management. His methodological approaches are often interpretive; with a particular interest in Grounded Theory and systems thinking.

He is passionate about enhancing the student experience for which he has twice received a Vice-Chancellor’s Teaching Award (2007 & 2016) that acknowledges ‘an outstanding contribution to education at the University of Southampton.’ He has taught across the range of UG, PGT (incl. MBA) and PGR.

He holds a BSc (Open) with a focus on Environmental Science, an MSc in Sustainability (Soton) with distinction, an MBA and a PhD (Soton) in project risk management. Ian also holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice (PGCAP) and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and APMP with the Association for Project Management.

Ian has held numerous administrative roles, including: Deputy Head of School (sabbatical cover), Director of Undergraduate Education, Senior Tutor, Programme Director, CSR Track Chair - British Academy of Management conference (for 3 years), External examiner and Member of Senate.

Prior to academia, Ian enjoyed a successful career as a programme/project manager in the pharmaceutical and process control industries. Over more than a decade, he led a range of change initiatives from facilitating small continuous improvement teams to eventually reporting to Director level in a FTSE100 head office implementing world-wide supply chain restructuring programmes.

Research interests

Ian’s research interests include sustainability science, corporate social responsibility and project management. Completed research grants:

Understanding human perception of environmental conflict: the case of hydropower schemes and the willingness to pay. This project investigated environmental conflict between stakeholders associated with the development of environmentally sustainable hydropower energy. In collaboration with Laura Watkin (PGR student), Dr. P. Kemp (lead supervisor) and Prof. I. Williams. Fully funded PhD studentship through the ESRC/EPSRC Collaborative Studentship Pilot Scheme (GBP 62,319).

An attitude survey of corporate responsibility activity in the face of major change. This work was with Prof Humby in conjunction with the Chartered Institute of Purchasing & Supply. GBP 1,500 (Achilles) as well as GBP 1,500 pump-priming funds (University of Southampton).

Understanding the attitudes and behaviours of SME owner/managers in response to the inclusion of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) criteria in procurement strategies of large organisations: with consequent practice and policy implications (with Dr. D. Baden (PI), Dr. D. Woodward, Dr. A. Knight) - GBP 44,000 ESRC research grant.

'Embedding CSR into supply: a snapshot of progress' in collaboration with Prof. Humby. GBP 1,500 support funding from Achilles.
