The financial sector risk analysis research conducted within the Centre for Risk Research (CRR) has recently attracted the attention of Kx Systems, providers of the state-of-the-art kdb database and Big Data analytics tools to leading financial institutions such as Morgan Stanley, RBC, Fidelity, Goldman Sachs, and Deutsche Bank.

Kx Systems have agreed to sponsor the CRR by providing them with the kdb database platform, optimized for streaming, real time and historical database analytics. This, together with the CRR’s database of financial market tick prices, significantly enhances the CRR’s ability to undertake Big Data risk analysis in the financial sector.

Mark Sykes, Kx Systems Chief Operating Officer, launching the new partnership with the CRR, highlighted ‘the valuable work the CRR is undertaking in analysis of risk taking behaviour in financial markets’. He indicated that ‘the kdb system provided to the CRR is identical in specification and power to those installed at leading tier 1 banks and hedge funds around the world, who routinely value equivalent systems at greater than $250,000 US.’

The system now in place in the CRR is the technology of choice for speed and performance when tackling challenging analytic workloads for financial institutions around the world, and is being adopted by businesses in other sectors, like utilities, pharmaceutical companies, telecommunications firms, and oil and gas concerns.

Professor Ming-Chien Sung, in thanking Kx Systems for their generous sponsorship, made it clear that ‘the CRR are proud to be joining an elite group of universities who are sponsored by Kx Systems, including Harvard Business School, MIT, Carnegie Mellon and Berkeley. We are excited about the potential offered by the kdb database and Big Data analytics tools and we are grateful to Kx Systems for also providing training packages and support that will ensure wide usage of the system across the research and teaching activities associated with the CRR’.
