Matt is Director of the Wessex Institute.

We are nationally important and internationally recognised for our work on how to choose the right research, how to do it, publishing, reviewing and disseminating findings to keep people healthy and improve their care when they are not. I am very proud to be part of a wonderful team of people that do that.

Our work is underpinned by the Adding Value in Research (AViR) Framework. Matt leads a programme of work aimed at maximising the impact of research, reducing waste and Adding Value in Research (AViR). Matt is also a co-convener of an international forum of funders who are interested in sharing best practice EViR. This work was recognised with the inaugural international Cochrane-REWARD award.

Matt joined NETSCC in 2009 as the Assistant Director of NETSCC Strategy and Development, working across all of NETSCC’s activities and supporting its growth.

Since then he has been Assistant Director for the Health Technology Assessment Programme, and Director for the Efficacy and Mechanism Evaluation Programme, Health Services and Delivery Research Programme, and Public Health Research Programme.

Previous to working at NETSCC, he trained and worked as a medical physicist, both within the NHS and for a medical device company (for which he ultimately held the position of Technical Director).

Research interests

My research interests focus around raising the impact of research for a given cost by reducing avoidable waste, increasing its relevance, and improving quality and integrity of research.

As Director of the Wessex Institute I am responsible for leading our activities. As NIHR lead for Adding Value in Research I have national responsibility for the NIHR acclaimed approach to addressing research waste, research integrity and transparency.
