Following Julian’s PhD in applied toxicology at the University of Aston in Birmingham, he spent some further time in research and worked in the pharmaceutical industry for three years.
He has taught at Peter Symonds’ College since 1994, mostly teaching A level Biology and the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ). He has taken on a variety of extension and diversification projects in Biology. These currently include Biology Extension group – a weekly series of lectures and practicals, and the Authentic Biology project – a collaboration with the University of Southampton introducing students to research using animal models, initially funded by the Wellcome Trust.
He also helps to prepare students for other activities and qualifications, such as the Biology Olympiad exams, large animal handling courses for potential vets at Sparsholt College, coordinating practice interviews for medical, dental and veterinary school applicants and any other interesting or unusual opportunities that arise.
Most recently this has involved running the Biology component of the Peter Symonds’ College's contribution to HE+ (an initiative run by Trinity College, Cambridge) in which a fruitful collaboration with the University of Southampton has allowed third year undergraduates to teach year 12 A level students about their favourite biological ideas.
In the little spare time he has left he likes to draw, paint and play guitar.
