CLLEAR

CLLEAR provides a stimulating environment for postgraduate students to study in. We offer three taught MA courses, an MRes, an IPhD and a PhD programme. For more information about these programmes, please see the links below.

Staff members of the Centre are very experienced in research supervision. They have expertise in English and other international languages, language and identity, second language acquisition, language in education, English for academic purposes, and autonomy/ individualisation in language learning.

The Centre provides formal research methods training through relevant units on its different MA programmes in applied linguistics/ English language teaching. In addition student research is supported through regular seminars and other opportunities to present and discuss work in progress, in a supportive atmosphere. All research students are expected to attend elements of School and Faculty research training, which develops in a wide range of academic and employment skills. Students also take part alongside research active staff in the wider activities of the Centre (seminars and conferences).

Research students working in the Centre have access to the excellent facilities for languages at Southampton, including a range of resource collections supporting teaching and learning in different languages, state of the art digital teaching facilities, and extensive research resources including a growing corpus of learner language.

Many of our students come from outside the UK and focus in their research on a wide range of sociocultural and educational settings.
