Chloe Eddy BSc Education

Hi, I'm Chloe Eddy and I am studying BSc Education.
Studying at the University of Southampton has given me the opportunity to learn about what I love while developing my confidence in all that I do. I value the academic skills I’ve gained and hope to apply them to further studies after my degree, something I would have never thought would interest me before starting here!
Why did you choose to come and study at Southampton?
Studying at the University of Southampton was appealing due to its reputation as a leading Russell League, research intensive university. The Education course is recognised as one of the best in the country and knowing I would be working with academics leading the way in their disciplines was exciting. After coming to an applicant visit day and seeing the on campus facilities and hearing other student experiences, I decided Southampton was the right University for me.
What is it like studying here?
Studying at the University of Southampton has been an amazing experience so far. Throughout my first year I feel I have established a strong foundation to complete my degree. It is a really contemporary course, utilising the latest research and issues within education.
How do you rate the study facilities at the University?
Hartley Library offers a wide selection of books for my course, both physically and online. The training provided during my induction week meant I was quickly able to start accessing all the resources available and get the best out of my studies. The Education social space is an added bonus, I know not all schools are lucky enough to have one! It’s a nice place to meet with other students across all years of study, and helps create a sense of community in the Education School.
Have you undertaken any work placements, collaborations with industry, internships, studying abroad or volunteering? How have these enhanced your experience?
During my Critical Observations module, I was lucky enough to spend 8 hours in a Primary school to observe teaching. This was an amazing opportunity to link all the theory I had learnt to the practice I observed.
What are you most proud of from your time at Southampton so far? (This could be social or academic)
After working for 3 years after college, I was initially worried about how I would settle back into my studies. I’m proud of how I’ve continued to push myself out of my comfort zone and achieve a high standard of work in my first year.
What do you think you have gained from your studies that you wouldn’t have developed without them?
Studying at the University of Southampton has given me the opportunity to learn about what I love while developing my confidence in all that I do. I value the academic skills I’ve gained and hope to apply them to further studies after my degree, something I would have never thought would interest me before starting here!
How have the people you have met at Southampton changed your life?
Meeting new people from so many different backgrounds has been amazing, both staff and students. Everyone has unique perspectives on the themes within education and the collaborative nature of the course means we can share these experiences.
Have you undertaken any extracurricular activities? How have they enhanced your experience?
Being a course representative and representing the student voice for my cohort has been an amazing experience. I’ve enjoyed working with staff and other students to share feedback and make improvements to the course, and knowing how much the student voice is valued by staff is great. This role has played a major part in developing my confidence over first year, and before starting my studies here I would not have gone for opportunities like this in the past. Likewise, being a student ambassador for the university and speaking to prospective students about my experiences has given me CV boosting skills while doing something I love!
What will you do with your degree/research after you have finished your studies?
Studying education at the University of Southampton has definitely broadened my horizons in terms of the scope of careers I can pursue. Right now, I am interested in continuing my studies after my undergraduate degree is finished, and ultimately hope to work in educational research.
