Climate Change Health and Wellbeing

Thermal images of three individuals displaying temperature variations, with temperatures of 35.8°C, 34.2°C, and 33.8°C.

Climate action, reducing emissions and adapting to change, protects our health and future wellbeing, especially when we highlight and support the health benefits these actions bring.

This cross cutting interdisciplinary theme, led by the Institute for Life Sciences, the Sustainability and Resilience Institute and the Southampton Marine and Maritime Institute, focuses on specific impacts of climate change on health and wellbeing. Our four focus areas generate data on potential impacts and consequences of strategies and interventions to adapt to and mitigate the impacts of climate change on health.

Coastal communities face a complex range of opportunities and challenges in the twenty-first century, locally to Southampton, around the UK, and worldwide. The Coastal Communities research group brings together academic, practice, community, and policy experts across economic, social, health, and environmental realms to collaboratively work toward sustainable solutions.

Professor
Poor air quality is one of the leading risk factors for ill health and early death. Our changing climate, and our response to it, has the potential to directly and indirectly make things worse - understanding these interactions will be crucial to protecting the health of the global population.
