About this course

Develop the artificial intelligence and data skills shaping the finance industry with our master's in financial technology (FinTech) and AI.

This master's degree brings together finance, financial technology and applied AI, and prepares you for the rapid transformation of financial services through AI, data-driven methods and digital innovation.

You’ll build a strong understanding of key financial theories and concepts. You’ll also gain practical knowledge of computational methods and AI used in financial technology.

AI and machine learning are embedded throughout this FinTech degree, not just offered as add-ons. This means you'll graduate with applied AI competence at a professional standard, ready to contribute to the ongoing transformation of banking, investment and financial services.

The University of Southampton is ranked in the global top 100 in the QS World University Rankings, as well as the global top 100 for accounting and finance.

Learn by doing with real financial data and AI tools

You don't need prior programming experience to apply for this FinTech and AI master's degree course. Whether your background is in finance, economics, management, engineering or science, you'll build programming and data skills step by step with structured support.

Teaching is practical and skills-led from the start. Through computer laboratory sessions, guided workshops and project-based learning, you'll work with real financial data, develop practical AI skills, and learn how to assess the risks, limitations and governance issues of AI in financial decision-making.

You'll also build knowledge and skills in:

  • Python, financial modelling and AI-supported workflows in finance
  • AI and machine learning for banking, investment, portfolio management and risk analysis
  • financial data platforms, including Bloomberg and LSEG Workspace
  • model risk, data quality, governance and regulatory issues in AI-driven finance
  • dissertation and project work linked to real-world financial challenges

Graduate ready for high-demand careers

AI isn't the future of finance – it's the present, and employers are increasingly expecting candidates to work confidently with analytics and AI tools from day one.

Industry evidence from organisations such as the World Economic Forum, the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) and the Financial Services Skills Commission has informed the course curriculum.

This means our master's in financial technology and AI prepares you for graduate roles in:

  • financial technology and innovation
  • AI and data analytics in financial services
  • digital banking and transformation
  • banking and investment analytics
  • portfolio management and asset pricing
  • financial risk and model risk analysis
  • data and AI consulting in financial services
