Ian Sinclair is Professor of Engineering Materials at the University of Southampton.

He has supervised and co-supervised over 40 PhD and post-doctoral projects in the field of microstructural and damage analysis of a wide variety of materials, including extensive use of high-resolution computed tomography, modelling and novel materials development.

Whilst original working in structural aerospace materials, he has developed a wide-ranging multidisciplinary experience, including hard and soft tissue analysis for medical and biological sciences, soil and plant science, and palaeontology.

As of Dec 2020, Prof Sinclair has over 155 ISI-listed articles published, including several invited reviews, and an h-index of 38 (h-5 of 16). Collaborations in applications of computer tomography include Nikon, MIT, Teledyne Scientific, US Airforce/EOARD, Oxford, Cambridge, Mines de Paris, Karlsruhe/ANKA and INSA-Lyon.

Recognition of early work in computed tomography is seen in selection by the Editors of J. Phys. (2004) for novelty and impact on future research, shortlisting for the Göran Selvik Award of the European Orthopaedic Research Society (2004) and invited contribution to the Scripta Materialia ViewPoint Set “3D Characterization and Analysis of Materials” (2006). Partnership and consortia activities include founding membership of the Southampton-led DARP on Advanced Metallic Airframes with Oxford, Cranfield, Imperial and the Open University, along with Airbus and BAe Systems (~£1.2M total EPSRC funding) and the EPSRC CCPi in Tomographic Imaging.

National standing recognised in panel membership for the EPSRC ‘X-Ray Tomography Roadmap 2018’, discerning future UK national requirements for X-ray CT capabilities. International invited activities include the influential, invitation-only DARPA/DSRC workshop series (Washington June 2009, ‘Materials by Design’) and relevant keynote presentations (e.g. 3D Materials Science (3DMS) Industrial Computed Tomography (iCT) and Dimensional X-ray Computed Tomography (DXCT)).
