Hi, I'm Aditi Chandra Arora and I studied BA Geography with French at the University of Southampton.

Both the Geography and French components of my degree have been incredibly enriching and helped me gain incredible subject knowledge as well as helping me to discover my passion.

Q: Why did you choose to come and study Geography at the University of Southampton?

Its ranking and reputation as a Russell Group university was highly attractive to me. Southampton seemed the perfect distance from home having grown up in London. Furthermore, I wanted to continue to be part of a vibrant city that has strong transport links to other towns and rural areas such as the New Forest.

Q: What is it like studying here?

I find the studying straightforward and rarely stressful – Geography students are given lots of opportunities to meet your personal academic tutor and to meet with lectures if unsure about any content or assignment. I have made many close friends on the course so I genuinely look forward to lectures to seeing everyone! The atmosphere on campus is buzzing and lively – there is always something happening on the Redbrick which brightens up my day and it is inspiring to witness all of the hard work that students pour into so many great causes, charities and societies.

Q: What were your Southampton highlights?

I have thoroughly enjoyed being President of the Geography Society (GeogSoc) and organising/attending all of the events involved. My semester abroad studying in Rouen, France was another significant highlight as I made lifelong friends and dramatically improved my French.

Q: How has your time at Southampton helped you to grow as a person?

Both the Geography and French components of my degree have been incredibly enriching and helped me gain incredible subject knowledge as well as helped me to discover my passion and go on to study a Masters at the University of Cambridge next year in my specialised field. Southampton has sculpted me into a hard-working yet well-rounded person. I honestly do not believe that I could have joined as many extra-curriculars of such a varied nature at any other university. I have participated in events I would have never considered – from international hitchhikes to blogging for the university – and I could never thank the university enough for making that so easily available and accessible to me.

Q: What have you enjoyed most about your course?

I have loved the breadth of topics available to study as I feel I have gained a really comprehensive and holistic knowledge of various geographical sub-disciplines. I have also loved getting to know the lecturers and discovering more about their respective research. As the course rep for my year, it has also been fantastic being able to voice crucial feedback from students to staff, and witness positive changes come around in response to that.
