Teaching quality

We strive to provide excellence in all of our teaching and learning activities. The high standard of our courses is acknowledged through the professional accreditation of our degree programmes by the Geological Society of London and by IMarest.

In the teaching lab

To help ensure we meet our own demanding standards, we employ several mechanisms that are designed to monitor and enhance our teaching on an annual basis. This includes a programme of class observation in which each member of staff has at least one of their teaching events observed by another established member of staff; formal reviews of entire course modules that take place at regular intervals, and feedback from students via a detailed end-of-course questionnaire. Individual degree programmes are reviewed periodically by a board of assessors that include external and industry representatives.

Given the importance we place on these issues, these procedures are coordinated by our Deputy Heads (Education) and reported on regularly to the Educational Quality Committee and the Head of Ocean and Earth Science. The outputs are used to identify potential problems and their solutions and to highlight good practice that can be disseminated throughout the department.

We are extremely proud, but certainly not complacent, about the quality of our teaching. The most recently available statistics from the National Student Survey and our own University Exit Questionnaire (completed by graduating students) show that our courses exceed the threshold expectation of teaching quality and that student appraisal of our teaching is not only one of the best within the University, but also at a national level.

The teaching staff are friendly, professional and always willing to help. Their enthusiasm and expertise in the subject radiates in lectures. I feel they are not just helping us to get a degree, but to create a career.
