Mentoring

We (the Diversity and Inclusion Working Group [EDIWG] with backing from the Head of School, Lindy Holden-Dye) have created the School of Biological Sciences (SoBS) mentoring schemes. Postgraduates, Postdocs, new Academics and TAE staff can request advice on a range of topics and receive local support and advice from a mentor in SoBS. This might begin as 1-to-1 sessions but could be expanded to include small group discussions and informal chats.

Our vision through this scheme is to offer multiple and flexible mentoring opportunities that enhance professional and personal development of our staff and PGRs. This flexibility will therefore give mentees the opportunity to select different mentors based on their needs at key stages of their career.

The aim is to make mentoring enjoyable, useful and manageable for both mentors and mentees.

For a basic introduction to mentoring, see this free online mentoring course.

We have a list of mentors which contains information about the areas of expertise they can support. Mentees can select a mentor based on their personal and professional needs.

The following list includes the range of mentoring expertise available.

The university mentoring page contains further information about what mentoring is and a list of benefits that becoming a mentor or a mentee provides.

If you are from the School of Biological Sciences and would like to be involved and become a mentor, please contact Fatima Matin at f.matin@soton.ac.uk, with your name and any information about the areas of expertise you may be able to support with.
