Research Degrees

As a postgraduate research student at Humanities you will benefit from a high class research environment and collaborative working across our varied academic fields. We offer a postgraduate research programme within each of our seven disciplines, alongside an integrated doctoral programme in Applied Linguistics and Film.

Our research degrees lead to a doctorate or PhD in a specialist subject of your choosing. You can undertake to study with us on a full-time or part-time basis. Full-time doctoral study takes up to four years, and part-time up to seven years. Candidates begin their studies registered as an MPhil/PhD student and upgrade during year two (or four, if part-time) to PhD if they have met the requirements. Doctoral candidates will need to submit a final thesis of 75,000 words and undertake a viva voce (oral examination). Every PhD student is assigned a supervisor who will assist you in developing your personal knowledge of your chosen research area, helping you to reach the aim of doctoral study: an independent contribution to knowledge.
