School of Ocean and Earth Science

A scuba diver checking their pressure gauge as they float in the sea beneath a layer of ice.

We seek to provide better understanding of our dynamic planetary system and address key societal challenges in the ocean and Earth sciences.

The quality of staff and facilities at our unique waterfront campus, based at the National Oceanography Centre Southampton (NOCS), enable us to recruit top-level researchers and educators from around the world. These experts work in the areas of geochemistry, geology and geophysics, marine biogeochemistry, marine biology and ecology, palaeoceanography and palaeoclimate, and physical oceanography.

Ocean and Earth Science research groups
Our groups, centres and institutes

Research groups, centres and institutes bring together specialists to share knowledge and solve problems.

The strong performance of our school builds on synergies across our research, education and knowledge exchange activities and is underpinned by our disciplinary diversity.
