About this course

Become fluent in a major international language, deepen your understanding of linguistics and spend a year in a French-speaking country. You can complement your language learning with modules on linguistics, applied linguistics and sociolinguistics.

You'll have the opportunity to:

  • explore the linguistic and sociocultural dimensions of the French language
  • spend a year abroad, in year 3 in either a work placement, a British Council placement or at one of Southampton’s partner universities
  • develop the analytical, research and personal skills relevant to a range of careers and professions, including those for which French is a key requirement

By studying linguistics alongside French, you'll explore topics like the principles underlying the structure of sentences and the articulations of the mouth involved in speech.

You'll also be able to tailor your degree to your liking with a range of optional modules exploring anything from culture and history, to psycholinguistics, discourse analysis, or even post-war French thought.

You’ll have excellent resources to support you, including the Centre for Language Study which has resources like language and academic advising.
