I was originally attracted to Ocean and Earth Science at Southampton due to its high level of research and undergraduate opportunities but I have realised that there is so much more! Ocean and Earth Science at Southampton is a fantastic place to gain a full range of skills and knowledge. Everything you need to know is taught in such an engaging and personal way, from lectures to lab experiments, thanks to the open teaching style and hugely knowledgeable staff. The geology department has fantastic training opportunities for lab procedures, computer modelling and numerous analytical apparatus, which are sought after skills from future employers. Field trips reinforce everything that you learn. There are numerous residential field trips throughout the degree program, which allow for accreditation from the Geological Society, London.

University isn’t just about your degree programme. It’s about getting involved with as much as you can and meeting new, exciting people! During my second year at Southampton, I gained employment within Southampton University Students’ Union and helped to run things, from preparing our 1700 capacity night club to setting up for a live gig for famous artists! Being part of a ~500 strong student workforce is something you don’t forget easily and is something I will remember for many years! The Union is very proud of its 180 societies, and there is something for everyone! You name it, we have it! Over my time at Southampton, I have been a member of a few of these societies including backstage technical theatre, kayaking, extreme Frisbee.

Southampton is a very student orientated city and is a place that is never quiet. With students buzzing around, quite literally everywhere, there is never a disappointing day, or night to be had. With shops and nightlife everywhere and an ever increasing phone book of friends, you will find it hard to be bored. And most importantly, almost everywhere accepts student discount with your University ID card.

Like most people who pass through Ocean and Earth Science, I will be pursuing my geological interest into the fields of environmental radio-geochemistry and hydrogeology. I never had an interest in these fields when I came to Southampton, but due to numerous modules and endless training on specific equipment, I found that this area suited me perfectly.  I am now an Enterprise Fellow and Radioanalytical Specialist at University of Southampton, so the careers advice was definitely worth taking advantage of!
