Manufacturing and materials research

Welcome to our manufacturing and materials research case studies

Sparks flying during a manufacturing process

Key challenges in the 21st Century involve sustainable feedstocks, bespoke manufacture, material reduction, ‘smart materials’ that self-sense and repair, light-weighting for greening, end-of-life recycling and operating in harsh environments.

Our experts work across a wide number of application areas, from aerospace and automotive materials, to energy materials, surface engineering and corrosion. Our research ranges from electrochemical engineering to artificial hips, microsystems to 3D printing, micro dry powder dispensing to tribology, tomographic imaging to artificial intelligence. Our core strengths include functional materials, surface engineering, materials processing, structural materials and computed tomography.
