Research Facilities

We provide outstanding services, laboratories and research facilities for researchers in Biological Sciences and the wider University, local and corporate communities.

Biological Science's facilities comprise of newly-built shared research space, with all the equipment and resources expected in a modern life science laboratory, together with independently managed research facilities.  The shared laboratories contain individual research groups and common equipment areas housing tissue culture laboratories, electrophysiology facilities, a protein production laboratory, genomics equipment including real-time PCR, radiation laboratories and specialised research space for CL2 microbiology. We also have access to the Environmental Sequencing Facility based in Ocean and Earth Science (OES). The research facilities are independently operated and provide specialised state-of-the-art research equipment supported with dedicated technical expertise.

All facilities operate on a cost recovery basis and are open to users in other programmes within the University and outside organisations. With the exception of the Interdisciplinary Centre for NMR and the Sequencing Facility, all facilities are located within the new Life Sciences Building on Highfield campus.

Biomolecular Core Facility

Biomolecular Core Facility

Our biophysical equipment is housed in both the shared research space and in a dedicated space in the resource core of the Life Sciences Building.

Centre for Proteomic Research

Centre for Proteomic Research

The Centre for Proteomic Research combines instrumentation with expertise to undertake proteomic-based projects from industry and academic institutions.

Imaging and Microscopy Centre

Imaging and Microscopy Centre

The Imaging and Microscopy Centre provides a selection of state-of-the-art research grade optical biological imaging resources.

Interdisciplinary Centre for NMR

Interdisciplinary Centre for NMR

We provide a platform for the application of magnetic resonance to study the structure and dynamics of small molecules, biomolecules and materials.

Invertebrate Facility

Invertebrate Facility

Our Invertebrate Facility has nine environment-controlled rooms that can be used for the long-term culturing of populations and for short-term experiments.

Macromolecular Crystallisation Facility

Macromolecular Crystallisation Facility

The Macromolecular Crystallisation Facility hosts a screenmaker robot for custom crystallisation formulations, a nanodrop crystallisation robot and crystal imagers.

Plant Growth Facility

Plant Growth Facility

The facility provides glasshouse and controlled environment rooms to house plants for traditional and novel research and plants for UG teaching programmes.

Tissue Culture Facility

Tissue Culture Facility

The facility has three laboratories for primary and secondary tissue culture which provide access to equipment for the culture of mammalian cell lines.

Environmental Sequencing Facility

Environmental Sequencing Facility

The facility provides services such as advice on experimental design, library preparation & quality control, sequencing and bioinformatic data analysis.

If you have any specific queries relating to the use of these facilities, please contact the centre or unit directly.
