The Southampton Diffraction Centre

The Southampton Diffraction Centre plays a fundamental role in the following educational opportunities

MSc Instrumental Analytical Chemistry

This course focuses on the primary characterisation techniques found in any chemistry department and much of industry - NMR, Mass Spectrometry and X-ray Diffraction. Additionally there is a strong element of Separation Science, Vibrational Spectroscopy, Data Science and Facility Management as well as Group and Individual projects.

Hands on experience with advanced analytical techniques
CHEM3046 Advanced Practical

CHEM3046 Advanced Practical

A novel third year practical split over two days, where students grow polymorphs and perform their own single crystal, powder diffraction and hot stage microscopy characterisation. The practical manual is provided by an Electronic Laboratory Notebook system (LabTrove) where students also record their observations and assessors provide feedback.

PhD student training

All PhD students that will make use of crystallography for their research undergo a training course in small molecule and/or materials diffraction. This course is undertaken at induction and has a heavy practical element, as students are encouraged to perform their own data collection and analyses.

The hands-on approach to the experiment really allowed us to further our understanding of the technique
