This module is one of the option modules that can be taken by students from the two programmes taught at Dalian. Whilst the learning outcomes are the same no matter which of these programmes you are taking, the output from this module may reflect the media or materials of your programme.

Having successfully completed this module, you will be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:
- the concept and value of "ethics within Art & Design";
- an awareness of practices that are responsible with regards to environmental issues and social communities.
- integrity in creative design e.g. copyright;

Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:
- present and debate a basic understanding of low impact practices, sustainability and creative design that considers the wider community.
- make informed decisions regarding working practices and justify those decisions;
- identify the central themes and problems of ethics within Art & Design and relate them to your own practice;
Transferable and Generic Skills
Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:
- present the outcome of your research in a seminar context;
- manage the time to access resources available;
- demonstrate awareness of global contexts.

Syllabus
This module introduces you to some of the debates and arguments that are central to an ethical understanding of the practice of design. You will be introduced to such issues as provenance and the subjects of sustainability, the value of cultural diversity and social responsibility of design and creative practice. You will be encouraged to debate these definitions, perspectives and the application of these theories relative to your subject.
The critical perspectives addressed in this module are viewed from the point of view of the practitioner.

Relationship between the teaching, learning and assessment methods and the planned learning outcomes:
You will be introduced to a range of subject material through lectures and have the opportunity to discuss and debate these subjects in seminar groups. You will be encouraged to research and study particular aspects of social responsibility and ethical practices in design, in particular, with regards to your own subject and ideas. You will have the opportunity to critically reflect on your practice and debate your awareness of the needs of others and the potential impact of creative design on the environment.
