Module Aims

Knowledge and Understanding

Having successfully completed this module, you will be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:

  • the relevance and importance of the ideas and practices of your discipline.
  • techniques applicable to your own research
  • learning resources and study skills to support your research
  • how to experiment with your ideas through different working methodologies and references

This module establishes your approach to an individual understanding of how to advance your ideas in the broad context of contemporary design and at a finer level, the context of your chosen subject specialism. It aims to develop your awareness of how to refine your thinking and to recognise potential lines of enquiry. You will engage with concepts so as to challenge and advance your thinking and ideas, and initiate work which will form the basis of your engagement with the programme and your pathway.

Special Features

Field trips will be organised so that transport to and from venues will meet the special needs of any student. The accessibility of the venue to be visited will also be assessed and any appropriate support provided to students with special needs as required.

Learning and Teaching

Teaching and learning methods

Teaching methods include • Formal lectures • Tutorials/workshops • Visiting lecturers • Case study analyses • Student led seminar presentations Learning activities include • Peer group learning • Problem solving activities • Class discussion/ critique Relationship between the teaching, learning and assessment methods and the planned learning outcomes In this module learning and teaching activities focus on helping you to explore and analyse your work and ideas. Feedback on your progress and development will be given through seminars and tutorials. Informal feedback in seminar situations will provide opportunities for peer group learning, self-evaluation and discussion of current issues in contemporary design. These sessions additionally allow you to develop your understanding of your ideas, help you to recognise and evaluate your analytical, critical, practical and transferable skills. A study visit will familiarise you with current practices in international contexts. You will be encouraged to attend, but it is understood that as you will have to self-finance the visit, it may not be possible for all students to attend for financial or other reasons, i.e. personal commitments or disability. Alternative study visits in the UK are provided for these students (these may be locally or in major UK galleries within daily commutable distance).
