DEMO2008 Population and Reproductive Health

Module Overview

We will analyse population health issues in different country contexts with reference to epidemiological and nutrition transition frameworks. We will discuss the role of health systems and policy strategies needed for population health interventions. Population health will be analysed through a comprehensive life course approach. Important sexual and reproductive health issues, such as family planning use, psychosocial aspects of reproductive health, STIs and maternal health will be discussed. We will analyse causes and determinants of poor SRH and discuss how interventions can improve it.

Learning Outcomes

Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:

  • Discuss a wide range of current and emerging population health issues in low-, middle and high-income countries referring to the epidemiological and nutrition transition frameworks.
  • Use a life course approach in understanding population health, with a consideration of important risk factors and risk indicators that influence the health status (outcomes) of populations.
  • Explain the concepts, history and importance of sexual and reproductive health (SRH) in the current population debate.
  • Analyse causes and determinants of poor SRH and discuss interventions which may improve it.


The module will cover: - Population and reproductive health over the life course - Key issues in family planning and pregnancy outcomes - Dynamics of psycho-social issues in SRH - Epidemiological and nutrition transition frameworks - A life course perspective to health and its risk factors - Data and measurement issues of population health - Health inequalities and health systems

Learning and Teaching

Teaching and learning methods

The module will be taught using lectures, seminars and independent study. Lectures introduce the key concepts, which are discussed in the seminars. Independent study based on reading lists as well as independently defined relevant material will ensure in-depth understanding of the issues.
