EMHP3005 Interventions for emerging mental health difficulties in education settings

Module Overview

EHMPs will need to develop and awareness of emerging mental health difficulties in education settings and be able to intervene with parents / carer and school staff in these settings. Three key intervention skills will be taught in this module: The first core skill will be consultation skills. EMHPs will be expected to advise and support teachers and other school and college staff about the psychological effects of common problems in children and adolescents. Process consultation skills will provide a framework for the EMHP to offer consultation to staff in relation to specific groups of children or young people, or in relation to individual children. EHMHs will need to demonstrate competency in this area.

Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate competence in addressing early indicators of emerging mental health problems in an educational setting
  • Demonstrate competence in a school and college context working with large numbers of at risk children and young people
  • Develop skills to harness self-help and peer-support potential of CYP in educational settings
  • Develop skills to train others in basic mental health intervention skills
  • Develop skills in co-ordinating with healthcare and other service providers


Early Intervention Approaches in education settings: The EMHP must develop an understanding of all of these intervention approaches, they will need to develop competency in a model of consultation and then either Group work with children or young people OR/ Parenting Groups. It will be important to make sure that these different areas of intervention competency are fully represented across individual Education Mental Health Teams: • Consultation to education staff: Demonstrate competence and skill in offering consultation to school / college staff in relation to common problems that children and young people experience. Draw on a formal model of consultation to structure the consultation. Then either: • Group work – Specialist skills required for working with children and young people in groups Or/ • Parenting Groups: To be able to lead Parenting Groups in education settings and work alongside other education staff and parents e.g. transition parenting groups, parenting groups that are universally available for working with behavioural difficulties. The Above interventions to be applied to working with: • Attentional difficulties • Affect dysregulation • Self harm (please not group work is not indicated for self harm) • Substance misuse • Sleep
