HPRS3023 Future Professional Practice: Influencing Innovation & Change 1

Module Overview

This module aims to develop students’ skills in relation to leadership, innovation and entrepreneurship. The module will provide knowledge, understanding and preparation for transition into contemporary professional practice within a dynamic health and social care environment. Through completion of the module learning students acquire an understanding of the legal, political and cultural contexts in which professional practice occurs. It will allow students the opportunity to explore diverse professional futures and envision their career trajectories in a range of situations. As part of this module, students will be invited to attend an employability week. The module will require students to evaluate current structures of funding and organisation of health & social care in the light of health and well-being imperatives. It will also ask students to compare and contrast international systems of health & social care and provide an opportunity to exercise creativity in predicting what shape future services might take. It will require students to consider how they will ensure high quality provision even within financial constraints. The module will explore technical and resource innovations in professional and service delivery and encourage students to think of themselves as future leaders and change agents. Students will consider professional practice in relation to developing societal trends, government policy, research evidence, legislation and ethics. Such learning is then extended by supporting students in identifying and critically analysing novel and emerging areas of practice. Leadership, management and business development are all included in the module teaching, in order for students to critically appraise different service delivery structures and models (for example, social enterprise).

The aim of this module is to introduce the students to leadership, innovation and entrepreneurship. It will give them the tools to enable them to critically appraise different service delivery structures and models and to practise in a flexible, ethical and effective manner.

Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:

  • Critique the current funding, structure, leadership and management of the NHS and social care services
  • Evaluate clinical governance arrangements and explore how they lead to quality measurement and improvement
  • Predict the drivers for change in health & social care including political, economic, social, technological, environmental and legal issues
  • Examine the core tenets of healthcare policy in order to ensure that innovative and novel practices which may be suggested are grounded in ethical, established intentions
  • Analyse legal, political and ethical issues and how they impact on health and social care provision within the context of a constantly evolving global and multicultural environment
  • Enhance academic skills for learning during the programme and into future professional practice by searching for, and critiquing research evidence in healthcare by accessing professional journals and associated literature
  • Define different approaches to leadership, management and business structure in order to formulate a feasible and convincing business case
  • Demonstrate reflective practice relevant to continuous professional development by building a Personal Development Portfolios (PDPs) and explaining CPD requirements
  • 9. Preparing for seeking employment as a qualified healthcare practitioner in first posts by a. attending the Employability Week activities b. building a CV & personal statement to support job applications c. practising interview skills d. exploring possible future careers in the health & social care sector - but with reference also to opportunities in private enterprise, social enterprise, the independent & voluntary sector e. exploring their future practice placement educator role and their skills in mentoring future unqualified or junior, professionals

Syllabus

Module content will include (although this is not an exhaustive list): • Funding healthcare services in constrained financial circumstances • Developments and trends in the organisation and structure of health care provision in the UK, with comparisons to other developed nations • Political, legal and ethical issues influencing practice • Health, social care, third sector and role-emerging practice settings • Wider influences on, and issues for, health & social care services • Innovations in healthcare • Employment skills including supervisory skills • Reflective practice and the need for continuous, life-long learning • Leadership and management • Clinical governance • Global and multicultural perspectives of healthcare • Continuing professional development and other professional requirements • Business models and structures (for example, social enterprise and private practice) • Planning for employment (building a CV and Personal Statement, negotiating a reference, interview skills etc).
