Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of and analyse strategies for the screening, prevention and early detection/diagnosis of diabetes
  • Consolidate knowledge of differing beliefs, attitudes and values which may impact on lifestyle and cultural choices, considering the needs of individuals from differing ethnic backgrounds
  • Explore the psychosocial needs of individuals living with diabetes and their carers
  • Demonstrate understanding of the Pathophysiology, current pharmacological treatment, management and service provision of diabetes
  • Analyse the national and local guidelines and systems of care for the management of acute and long term complications of diabetes
  • Examine the local and multi-agency support available to ensure the provision of integrated partnership in health and social care


Syllabus content was developed in partnership with Medical and Nursing colleagues in primary and secondary care. • Current research, evidence and policy drivers • Pathophysiology of diabetes • Screening, assessment and diagnosis • Management of the full spectrum of diabetes across the lifespan e.g. types 1 and II, pre-diabetes, insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome and the impact of multiple co-morbidities • Lifestyle management options • Partnership approaches • The use of technology to support management e.g. telehealth/telemedicine options • Measuring patient outcomes • Identifying and managing emergent complications of the disease • Working across professional and organisational boundaries

Learning and Teaching

Teaching and learning methods

Keynote speakers will be identified to disseminate specific research activities related to Diabetes generated within the University. Face to face sessions will utilise some didactic lecturing supported by case studies, discussion and group work. Student centred seminars/case conferencing sessions will provide the opportunity for discussing key issues arising from teaching sessions and assignments. Learners will employ self directed and discovery learning to support the materials provided in face to face sessions, and will be expected to be involved in the presentation and discussion of case studies from their own practice. The University has a range of online facilities to support students develop the necessary skills to complete the module which include help with literature searching, literature searching and academic writing. Blackboard will be utilised to provide case studies in addition to lecture and course materials. A discussion forum will be used for communication between students. Facilitators will be available electronically for support and advice. The learning methods within this module have been considered in accordance with the Michael Report (Healthcare for All, 2008) and National Framework for Disability Equality & Etiquette Learning (DEEL) to promote best practice within Higher Education.

Assessment Strategy

Formative Multiple Choice Questionnaire. 1 hour examination (MCQ). Pass/Fail (learning outcomes: 1-7) Summative 3000 word Assignment: Students will be required to conduct a clinical audit* which includes a rationale and a short literature review. For the audit; individuals will Identify a work place mentor and review a specific aspect of diabetes care within their own area of practice, then measure this against explicit agreed criteria informed by local/national standards. The final document should make recommendations for the implementation of change, based on findings. This assignment will constitute 100% of the module mark and a mark of at least 40% is required to pass *For Audit: individuals will identify a work place mentor and review a specific aspect of diabetes care within their own area of practice, then measure this against explicit agreed criteria informed by local / national standards. The final document should make recommendations for change based on the findings. Students not in practice will be able to negotiate as equivalent assessment with the module leader.
