PAIR2019 Diaspora Politics in Transnational Space

Module Overview

A sample of topics addressed in this module includes: a) theoretical approaches to the subject; b) the redefinition of the notions of sovereignty, borders, citizenship, and national identity; c) the role and mobilization of diasporas as transnational political actors; d) sending and receiving states’ strategies to engage with people on the move; e) the emergence of public-private political partnerships across borders; f) the links and tensions between foreign policy and diaspora politics, and g) the record and prospects of international cooperation in this policy area.

Aims and Objectives

Module Aims

This course aims at introducing students to the study of international migration and the formation of diasporic communities as political actors from the perspective of transnational studies. Sessions cover the disciplinary conceptual and theoretical background, as well as specific topics such as: a) the redefinition of the notions of sovereignty, borders, citizenship, and national identity; b) the role and mobilization of diasporas as transnational political actors; c) sending and receiving states’ strategies to engage with people on the move; d) the emergence of public-private political partnerships across borders; e) the links and tensions between foreign policy and diaspora politics, and f) the record and prospects of international cooperation in this policy area. Empirical studies from all regions of the world are examined to illustrate how migrants, states, and non-state actors are contributing to the formation and transformation of transnational spaces.
